Great book to read a few pages whenever you need an uplift of your spirits. Some of the cakes are just hilarious! Many professional cake decorators obviously are unfamiliar with English language or American Holidays/Culture, and their mistakes are extremely humorously exposed by the author. Pick up anytime you need a little humor injection and once you have had your humor battery recharged, put it down and save the rest for another time. Would recommend for anybody needing an intermittent humor injection.Tags : Cake Wrecks: When Professional Cakes Go Hilariously Wrong [Jen Yates] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Cake Wrecks When Professional Cakes Go Hilariously Wrong Jen Yates 0050837265059 Books Reviews
I am not much of a chef, but I decided to get this book when I read the great reviews. I'm always up for something amusing, and I have been to the cakewrecks website and know that's there's some very funny stuff there.
Well, this is a funny, pretty little book. (Odd shaped for your bookshelf - it's short and wide.) The cake mistakes are filtered into 12 various chapters, with labels such as Holiday Horrors, Beyond Bizarre, and Oops! My personal favorites are ones that are the accidental mistakes - the ones that end up looking like, well, something you wouldn't exactly want to eat.
But here's the thing - as funny as some of these cakes are, I'm not sure that the book is worth the cost. It no doubt would make a cute little coffee table book, or a great present for friend who likes to bake. But for me personally, once I chuckled at the various designs, I was done. It's not something that I think I'm going to keep, and in fact I'm giving mine to my mother-in-law. But if you really the cakewrecks website and want something permanent in book form for your home, then this should make you happy.
Whether you prefer the "literal LOLs" (cakes where the decorator took his instructions a little too literally), the "dreaded CCC" (cupcake cake), the "poo phenomenon" (in which decorators don't seem to notice that piles or extrusions of brown icing look... wrong), "holiday horrors"--it's all in here, along with plenty more. Creepy cakes; bizarre cakes; the "say what?!" cakes and the "how on earth could the baker not realize how WRONG that is?!" cakes. You'll read the story of the naked baby carrot jockey that has become the mascot of the blog, and tales such as the bride who said she didn't care what kind of bachelorette cake she got as long as it wasn't a [...] cake. So of course, she ended up with a cake on which the words "not a [...] cake" were immortalized in icing.
Mind you, Cake Wrecks wasn't created to be mean to bakers. Jen anonymizes the wrecks, and sometimes bakers actually deliberately share their own wrecks with her. She also isn't going to be mean to your Aunt Edna, who once baked a cake for your birthday because your mom asked her to; these are professional wrecks, where either the bakers should have known better, or the customer specifically asked for something bizarre.
The book includes some fun background and extra tidbits on how the blog started, what it's been like running it and dealing with issues like trolls, how Jen defines a wreck, and so on. Jen's writerly voice is entertaining no matter what she's writing about, so this material is every bit as enjoyable as the wrecks themselves.
"Cake Wrecks" makes a perfect gift book, particularly for someone who needs a bit of laughter!
I've always enjoyed the Cake Wrecks website, so I knew that I would love this book. I've bought several and given them as presents, especially to people who are recovering from an illness, because laughter really does help. And this book makes everyone laugh out loud. The pictures of the professionally made cakes gone horribly wrong are great, and the accompanying descriptions are also hilarious.
Whether you're a fan of the Cake Wrecks blog or have learned about this book some other way, this is a really fun look at some of America's most egregious, amazingly unrecognized-by-the-baker pastry accidents. The book is divided into chapters, with an introduction at the beginning, and the author, Jen Yates, provides some very funny commentary between pictures. And no, the pictures aren't all the same ones from the blog!
Be forewarned, though if you're a baker, or if you know someone who is, you may find this book offensive. Cake "wrecks" are defined not just as cakes featuring misspelled words, or with poorly drawn graphics - they also include ideas of all stripes that just didn't seem to work. Popular motifs such as many styles of bridal shower and groom's cake are featured, as are many ambitious designs that seemed to be just a bit out of the baker's reach.
I recommend this for laughs - awesome as a funny gift and sure to be a conversation-starter if displayed in your home. We've all made "wrecks" of one kind or another, so if you have a sense of humor about your kitchen creations, you'll get a lot of laughs from this book.
Also, if you enjoy a certain blog and a print-version book comes out based on it, remember that purchasing the book is a great way to make sure the website stays around!
Brilliant and original idea for a book, with hilarious results. I laughed so hard I cried at some of them (and not just the first time I read them). It is hard to believe that the "professionals" who decorate fancy cakes are so illiterate and bone-headed about content. Well, maybe not -- they are decorating cakes for a living and not sending rockets to land on asteroids. Also some of their "artistry" is a little bit on the sloppy side. Highly recommended. One of the best humor books to come out in a long time.
