Here are 4 witches, one very powerful who are being hunted by dark forces. Assigned to the most powerful, Theo, Dante is assigned by the Circle Lightfall to protect her and, at some point she will be approached to join. Things are heating up as the negative forces hunting her and the other 3 draw a bead on her. Dante protects her and realizes she is the one who is meant for him. He approaches her because of the imminent danger, but she and the others decide not to join Circle lightfall. Instead they choose to craft a spell that will bind them to the city but make it safe, a spell that requires one of them to be 'taken' into the realm of the other side where she watches over the city. They all agree - seems silly to me when they have a perfectly good alternative to join Circle Lightfall and help rid the world of darkness - but, they don't seem to think that's a worthy cause. Instead they choose of let one of their group be sacrificed to save the city. A silly choice, in my opinion. Silly enough to make me decide not to read more of the series.

If you like the genre, this is a well written and interesting entry. But here's the thing. The writer wrote at least 4 more books in this series and each book is virtually the same. Just a different hero and heroine and a different bad guy (gal). Same emotions, same plot. So unless you want to read the same book numerous times, enjoy just one and move on to a different series by this usually trustworthy writer.
I think the reason that these books are so striking lies mostly with the male leads. Dante is an extremely compelling man and although Theo pulls back from the violence that has defined Dante's life she inevitably sees how incredibly devoted Dante is to her and only her. The maddening frustration that Dante suffers while desperately trying to keep Theo safe from her own altruistic tendencies saves the book from tipping into maudlin with humorous panic attacks from a man who looks like a line backer crossed with a street thug. The paranormal aspects are well defined and explained and by using common Wicca practice as a back drop the reader never feels lost in the lore of the books. This series may not be ground breaking but it is a thoroughly enjoyable well constructed tale with protagonists that you root for and evil forces to fear and triumph over.
Fast paced and well written. You can bet I'm getting the rest of the series!! I loved all the characters.
I enjoyed her saint city sinners books about dante valentine very much; I am not altogether interested in the "supergirl" or buffy the vampire slayer type but I did enjoy the interaction of human and devil, it was unusual, and did not have your usual endings, the plot was well thought out and interesting without a lot of romance, and the protagonists well defined.So I thought I would try her watcher series and it was a disappointment. The characters were not as well defined, the plot easily deduced, and I felt it was immature.
When I first started reading "Dark Watcher", I thought it had potential. The plot seemed like a good idea witches being hunted down by the bad guys and protected by slightly less bad guys, who happen to be hunks. Okay, not bad. But then it went downhill and became mediocre. Dante seemed like he could have been a very interesting character if his "dark" background had been been covered in more detail. Supposedly, he's this great warrior but when he meets Theo, he turns to mush? I mean, come on! If I had read him say "Theo, if you want me" one more time, I was going to scream! The other Watcher, Hanson, was almost as bad and his witch wasn't even that interesting.

This book could have been so much better, but it was too short. The story and the characters were not flushed out enough. All Dante and Theo seemed to do was banter amongst themselves and get attacked by a variety of different creatures. The other two witches, Elise and Mari, didn;t interest me enough to want to buy the other books in the series.
I love a good bodyguard romance. The Watchers series does "the Knight and the Lady" trope very well. The heroes almost always have totally black-and-white perspectives, while the heroines often don't see the big picture. Despite that frustration, these romantic adventure books are entertaining little escapes that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Always love a good read. Saintcrow's books never disappoint me. It's about magic, forces of good (light) and evil (darkness). I always enjoy the different characters. This book leaves no cliffhanger; but opens up for more to come. Theo's healing abilities and kindness made me smile. Seems to be the first book in the series. I had purchased 2 other books by the author; which had been a suggestion by based on purchases. SUPER glad I didn't passed on the opportunity!
