5 STARS!!!If you are an animal lover or have a soft heart like me than before you read this book grab the tissues because you will need it.
Hannah is one of the ten Abbott kids. She is the second oldest but by only three minutes to her twin brother Hunter. In this book Hannah has been grieving for her husband who was killed seven years prior in Iraq. She does not know if she will ever be able to move on with her life.
Even though since the past winter she has started to become lonely and when she danced with Nolan at the dance and he took her home and gave her a good night kiss that she didn't want to pull away from but did because of guilt she has not been able to stop thinking about him.
She knows he likes her because her family can not go a day without telling her that he asked about her. She is afraid she is not going to be able to move on. But there are some meddlesome old men (her dad and grandpa) who decide that they need a little push.
Hannah was set to go to see her friend for her monthly spa and girl day with her best friend but her SUV will not start. She thinks on who she can call in her family to come see about it because she really doesn't want to call Nolan (the mechanic). Everyone who would know anything about what it could be is not in town or unavailable so she has no choice but to call Nolan.
Nolan has been in love with Hannah for about five years now. They were good friends before that but about two years after her husband died his feelings for her have changed. He has waited on her to get ready to date for all of those years. He thought after they danced and he kissed her that maybe things were starting to move forward, but when she didn't answer her phone the next day or call him back at all he figured he messed up by going to fast.
After he got the phone call that something was wrong with her battery he rushed over there to see her. He apologized to her about taking advantage of getting to spend time together that night at the dance. She told him he didn't take advantage. He didn't believe her.
("He shook his head, dismissing her words. "I did take advantage. I've waited so long for you, Hannah. You have no idea how long. And the first chance I get, I couldn't leave well enough alone."
She was shocked by that statement. How long? She wondered but would not say it. She felt drawn to him because he was beating himself up over something that she wanted. She couldn't understand any of it but all the same she needed to set things straight with him."
""You didn't do anything wrong. It was me. I shouldn't have pulled away from you the way I did because I didn't want to stop kissing you. I don't know why I pulled away when that was the last thing I wanted to do."")
That got Nolan's attention but she told him she was really confused. He tried to tell her that it might help if they just spent some time together if only just having dinner every once in a while. She didn't know what to say because she would need time to think on it so she reminded him of her car that she had somewhere to be. He didn't really like that she was pulling away but he got on with the job at hand.
While he was working Hannah took the time to look at Nolan. He was very sexy and his work pants fit him very well. After he was done he told her to call him if she had any problems and she said she would. Right before he walked away she told him she would like to spend some time together that she would call him. He told her he would be waiting.
Hannah called to tell him she made it because she knew he would worry and because her friend had her call him to set up a dinner date for later that evening. They agreed to do just that. But when Hannah got home something was going on that kept them from going to dinner.
I am not going to say what it was because it is a big part of this book and I don't like to gibe those away. But, with what happened it brought Hannah and Nolan closer. They continued to see each other often.
As Hannah and Nolan continued to spend some time together things got a little heated.
""Let it happen, honey," he whispered against her ear, making her shudder. "You're so sexy, so beautiful and I want you so bad. I want to feel your soft skin against mine as I sink into your heat. I want to feel you come when I'm deep inside you. I want to touch you everywhere and kiss you and lick you.""
"His words and hands worked together in perfect tandem to tip her over the edge into pleasure so sharp and so intense, she ended up trembling uncontrollable and sobbing, wrecked by the total abandon he'd drawn from her."
Hannah went into one of the bedrooms and seen all of the boxes that were there from things Caleb had in Iraq. She had never gotten around to opening them. She decided that now would be a good time to open them. She found some journals from Caleb about the war and what he thought about it. She decided she would read them later that night.
After she met Cam at the diner to go over the ideas about her retreat for widows she knew she needed to go and see her in-laws before they found out about her and Nolan from someone else. She was nervous about what to say but she knew she had to do it anyway.
As she was talking to them she first told them about the retreat she was going to turn the old house into. They loved the idea. Then when started telling them about Nolan before she could say who it was they asked if it was Nolan. She wondered how they knew but they told her that he had come by about a month or so ago and asked if it would be ok. They felt just as much apart of his family as they did her and he didn't want to upset them by going out with her. That if it was going to bother them he would not do it.
She could not believe what she was hearing. It was sweet that he did that before they even started going out. After their talk her mother-in-law gave her an envelope from Caleb. He gave her specific instructions not to give it to her until she felt she was ready. She told her she believed she would be ready. When Hannah got home she decided not to read the letter yet. She was expected to see Nolan and she didn't want to be upset when he came over.
As things kept getting more and more heated with them. Hannah told him she was ready to have him but it would have to be at his house because she didn't think she could do that in the house that she shared with Caleb. He told her he had a better idea. They needed to get away for a weekend.
Hannah knew that before she went away with Nolan she needed to read the letter from Caleb. She could not believe he had written a "just in case" letter. She had asked him about it but he told her there was no use in doing it. She sat down and read the letter and cried her yes out. It was what she needed to move on. He was setting her free to love again. She decided to pack that letter into her bag and show Nolan later.
Things were going great until her brother-in-law found out from someone other than them that they were seeing each other. He said some things that he really should not of said and Hannah backed off. Nolan wanted to punch him for what he said and how it affected them.
He was crushed and Hannah was torn over what to do. The next day when she was leaving her brother-in-law (Gavin) was standing outside in her driveway. He gave her an apology and told her that Nolan was going to be his next visit. It just hurt to hear. They worked things out between them and she told him she really hoped she had not blown it with Nolan and he asked what she meant and she told him. He was sickened that what he had said did that to them.
She told him that she would try to work it out with Nolan not to worry. Later that day they did work it out. They had a big gathering of their and Caleb's old friends. They ended up coming out to them while they were all together. She had learned from what happened with Gavin not to let it go. They were all happy for them.
He took Hannah with him to watch him practice racing. She didn't know how she was going to feel watching him but she wanted to give it a chance since that was an important part of his life.
There are still things in Nolan's past that Hannah doesn't know about will he ever share them with her like she did with him?
What happened when Hannah saw him race? Did she freak out? or Did she love it? Does he propose?
Those are questions you will have to answer yourself after you read the book.
This book also gives us information into what could be future books.

This was such a beautiful book. After Hannah loses her husband to a landline in Iraq, it takes her 7 years to open her heart to love again. Nolan, best friend of Hannah’s late husband Caleb, fell in love with Hannah’s strength and courage two years after they lost Caleb. He patiently waited for her to be ready for him. It was such a sad and uplifting book. I cried multiple times.
After a series of heartbreaking loses and navigating the way through her loved ones feelings about Hannah dating again, will their love be able to survive? Yes. And it’s a beautiful journey.
3 1/2 Stars
I loved the first book in this series. I was hoping for good things for Hannah after the loss of her husband. While there were parts of this book that I loved, there were others I really didn't care for.
I really loved Nolan. The man had the patience of a saint when it came to Hannah. He was cautious, caring and loving with her. Never pushing, always conscious of her mind set and feelings. Always putting her first, even at his own expense.
I love this little town created for this series, from the quirky townsfolk to the towns mascot, Fred the moose.
I loved catching glimpses of Hannah's rather large family. And seeing the probable storylines set up for several of her siblings. Her father and grandfather are hilarious. I love the epilogue.
What I didn't care for was Hannah. While I understand her loss, and I know everyone deals with loss in their own way, it just felt like she took it to the extreme. She seemed to be more worried about how everyone else felt about her moving on, than how she herself should feel. Going as far as putting distance between herself and Nolan when it upset her brother-in-law after he found out she was seeing him. She spent so much time worrying about what others would think, she forgot to live her own life.
Hannah's internal monologue became monotonous. The book could have been shortened by at least a third, if we didn't have to put up with her thoughts of why she shouldn't move on, and what everyone must/probably/could be, thinking of her.
And Caleb, the deceased husband, had more page time than most of the living characters.
Nolan and Hannah do have a happy ending. But there were a few things I wanted answers to. Like what ultimately happened to Nolan's dad? The plans he had for his house? And her plans for the retreat she and Cameron came up with? Lots of things thrown out there that were just left dangling.
It did feel a bit like a "transition" book. Used to set up the upcoming books.
Even with this one not being my favorite, I'll continue to read the series. I'm curious about where some of the stories may be going.
